Like his father before him, Mehdi Shabzedehdar (مهدی شب‌زنده‌دار جهرمی‎) dedicated his life to becoming an Islamic jurist. Both sides of Shabzendehdar’s family are made up of clerics and revolutionary activists with close ties to the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His father was a student of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

After completing his education in jurisprudence at the Qom Seminary, Shabzendehdar began teaching and became a member of the Qom Seminary School Teachers’ Association. He was soon popular and became known as Aghazadeh due to his father’s fame as a celebrated cleric. It wasn’t long before he gained membership to the Supreme Council of Qom Seminary School. Later, Shabzendehdar became the representative of the Guardian Council on the Board of Trustees of the World Center of Islamic Sciences and Overseas Schools and Seminaries Organization.

Eventually, Shabzendehdar was selected as a member of the Jurisprudence Consultative Assembly of Guardian Council. After the death of Ayatollah Gholamreza Rezvani in 2013, he was appointed as a jurist member of the Guardian Council by the Supreme Leader and has retained this position.

In a video recorded in 2010 when the Supreme Leader was attending a memorial for Shabzendehdar’s father, he can be seen praying for the long life of Mahdi Shabzendehdar. These prayers had a direct connection with Shabzendehdar’s membership in the Jurisprudence Assembly of Guardian Council and then his seat on the Guardian Council.
